2019 Summer Championship
August 30 – September 14, 2019 | Bordeaux, France

One of the most unifying and inspiring moments of our trips is the ISAGS flag ceremony.

Two groups of members enjoyed what was one of our most memorable and successful Summer Championships to date. Over a two-week period, an enthusiastic group of members traveled to Bordeaux, France where we explored the land known as the “kingdom of grapes”, played golf on two outstanding golf courses and experienced Chateau living in its most grandiose and luxurious state.

Special thanks to our Officers for making this trip a reality and to our members for attending what was a unifying and memorable two weeks. We encourage you to scroll down for complete highlights and results.

FRIENDLY REMINDER: Online registration for the 2020 Mid-Winter Championship to Killarney Golf and Fishing Club and Europe Hotel is now open. Members should register as soon as possible by visiting ISAGS.org. Spots are limited, so we encourage your to register as soon as possible.

Our Host

Upon arrival in Bordeaux, we welcomed our members at the 4-Star Golf du Médoc Resort, which is perfectly nestled in the heart of 200 hectares of countryside. Its reputation as one of most beautiful resorts in all of Europe was quickly realized by all of our guests.

Many members took part in optional practice rounds at Le Château Golf Course, which proved to be in exceptional condition and lived up to its ranking as No. 14 in Golf World Magazine UK’s “Best Golf courses in Continental Europe”, before we were transported for a relaxing dinner in Bordeaux City.

Our second day – and first full-day experience – featured practice rounds for our members at both Le Château Golf Course and Les Vignes, which were both conveniently located at the Golf du Médoc. The day concluded with our Opening Cocktail Party, Flag Ceremony, and Welcome Dinner. It is always a memorable evening as our members from across the world are able to come together. It is one of the most unifying experiences that we have as an association.

Our Golf Experience

Throughout the seven-day experience our members were treated to casual practice and competitive rounds of golf on the two golf courses located within the Golf du Médoc Resort.

Le Château is routed across flat open country in the fashion of an inland links and featured a variety of heather, gorse and broom which was all too happy to catch some of our more wayward shots during the wek. Although it is not a links course, there were moments during out stay when the wind would blow in an westerly direction off the Atlantic and we – for a brief moment – would believe that we were beside the sea. It was certainly not hard to believe that Le Château had once hosted a French Open (which it did in 1989) as it was truly an outstanding track.

Les Vignes showed us true golf character. The first three holes had a distinct parkland character, but after that the layout opened up into a splendid hearthland terrain.

Our Championship – held on both courses – featured play in three divisions – Men’s, Super Senior, and Ladies.

During our first week in Bordeaux, Toronto’s Tony Cosentino earned a total of 101 points to finish first in the men’s gross division and just one point ahead of James Anastasio (Manasguan, NJ). John Mikkelsen of Santa Fe, New Mexico, was victorious in the the Age 65+ Bratton Cup after posting an impressive 100 points.

In the Stableford net division it was Jim Kelly of Granger, Indiana, who pulled out a one-point victory over Mexico’s Benjamin Gil. Jim finished with 155 points, while Benjamin turned in a total of 154 points. Michael Pittana finished third overall.

The second week witnessed a splendid performance by Rick Reimers from Scottsdale, Arizona. Rick posted a score of 127, including a competition-best score of 35 points on the final day to capture the men’s gross top prize. Johnny Powers (Scottsdale, AZ) finished second with 123 points, while Jerry Hutton (Long Beach, CA) took home the top prize in the Age 65+ Bratton Cup.

David Marshall (Portland, Oregon) and Donald Polyschuk (Toronto) were co overall champions with 150 points in the Men’s Stableford Division. Ed Gillespie (Bluffton, SC) claimed the A Flight division title, while Paul LeBlanc (Oakville) and Erich Lichtenberger of Largo, Florida were champions in the B Flight and C Flight, respectively

During Week 1 in the Super Senior Division, John Roberts of Stuart, Florida was the overall winner thanks in part to a 46-point performance during the third round. He claimed the top spot with a total of 148 points. Mike Kelly (Scottsdale, AZ) and John Laird (Little Silver, NJ) were also recognized as champions in the A Flight and B Flight, respectively.

During our second week in France, Douglas Chang (Taipei) and Carl Schenken (San Antonio, TX) finished as overall co-champions with 151 points. Tony Brebner of Toronto scored a victory with 145 points the A Flight, while fellow Torontonian Les Rozsa finished first in B Flight play.

Our Adventures

When our members were not playing golf or enjoying down time in their luxurious chateaus, they were transported to some of the most iconic and beautiful spots in all of France. Here are highlights from the day trips that were enjoyed by so many:

A Private Guided Tour of Bordeaux: Our members were taken to the city of Bordeaux, which is situated on the banks of the Garonne. We enjoyed a three-hour guided tour of Bordeaux, a relaxing lunch consisting of three courses and hours of shopping and site seeing.

Guided Visit & Wine Tasting in La Cité du Vin: In just one afternoon, we explored the La Cité du Vin, a unique cultural facility. We visited 20 different themed areas which took us on a voyage of discovery while we also enjoyed a unique experience exploring the many and varied facets of wine across time and space. Our trip was capped off by a visit to the permanent tour that included access to La Cité du Vin’s Belvedere, where we discovered a 360° view of Bordeaux while we tasted a glass of world wine.

Guided Visit of the Medieval Town of Saint-Emilion: Our guided tour included a tour of this medieval town and a visit to a family wine estate of Saint-Émilion. The winemaker greeted us and gave us you a tour of his estate: the vines, the wine cellar and the vat room. He also allowed us to discover the different steps of the wine-making process in Saint-Emilion.

Full day in Bassin d’Arcachon: Our day was spent exploring Bassin d’Arcachon which was replete with exquisite beaches, pine forests, sand dunes, chic towns, historic oyster-farming villages, and cycle trails. It was truly a day of nature appreciation, especially for those of us who are avid bird-watchers.

Fashion and Design Guided Tour of Bordeaux: Our pockets were a bit lighter following our shopping day in Bordeaux. We visited this elegant city and explored the large department stores and luxury brand shops as well as the more intimate Parisian couturiers, jewelers, craftsmen, perfume shops, leather goods shops, and specialized boutiques.

l’Officier de Bouche Cookery Classes: Our members worked side by side with renowned French chefs. Our four-hour cooking class taught us how to properly pair food with wine. We capped off the experience with a delectable lunch and – of course – an assortment of native wines.
